Help! What to Do if You Get Nervous When Speaking Spanish Suzy S. Do you get nervous when you have to speak Spanish, even if youve taken months or years of classes or lessons? Youre not alone. Read on as Spanish tutor Emmanuel N.  shares his tips for battling your nerves and becoming more confident When it comes to speaking a language, there are two ways of being good at it â€" the more scholastic way (reading, writing, and speaking all by the book) and the more layman’s way (mostly conversation-centered, using the common vernacular of a region or country). In other words, you can be good at Spanish by knowing how to do everything by the book, or you can be good at Spanish by knowing how to have real person-to-person conversations. Most people who learn Spanish as a second language tend to be the former. Natural Spanish speakers tend to be the latter. This tends to be the pattern because people who learn Spanish as their second language tend to learn only by the book, while natural Spanish speakers learn by the book, as well, but mainly by speaking it with everyone they know. This is why I believe that people who are learning Spanish as their second language tend to be very good at it scholastically, but very subpar when it comes to natural, flowing conversations. Speaking Spanish: Where to Start When You’re Nervous I’m pretty certain you don’t want to dive right in and start speaking Spanish to people who are fluent, and that’s understandable. However, I do believe that when you push your limits, you learn more. Instead of speaking purely in Spanish, or with people who will speak only in  Spanish, I recommend speaking Spanglish â€" a mixture of Spanish and English where you use English words when you don’t know how to say something in Spanish. Aside from that, heres what I recommend you do: Have full-blown conversations in Spanglish with anyone you know who speaks a moderate amount of the language. Its better if they know more than you. Try your best to speak only in Spanish with a friend or family member for a whole hour. Even if you have to translate for them, it’s alright. The important thing here is to force yourself to speak only Spanish. Translate all the television shows you usually watch to Spanish, and try your best to understand what theyre saying without English subtitles on. Speak to yourself at the end of the day (every day), and speak in Spanish as you say what you did all day. Try your best to speak only in Spanish, and look up translations only when you can’t think of the word or phrase. Tips for Overcoming Your Shyness Believe me, when it comes to being shy about your Spanish speaking, I know what it feels like. You’re extremely shy because you don’t have the accent or can’t really roll your Rs. You’re shy because the other person has to speak slowly for you to catch up. Or, you’re shy because you struggle to remember Spanish words on the spot and stand there embarrassed. Whatever it may be, I’ve been there and know the pain of being a shy Spanish speaker. However, the best way to get over your shyness is to practice. When it comes to your accent, the best way to improve is to listen to other people who are fluent in Spanish. Try your best to imitate the sound they make. I recommend watching television shows in Spanish or translating your favorite shows into Spanish. Listening to Spanish songs is also helpful. I, myself, don’t have the Latino accent, but I have learned to speak Spanish effectively even though I have an absent accent. Without the accent, Spanish speakers can still understand you. It’s better to have no accent than to have the butchered accent (where you pronounce every Spanish word incorrectly). Why You Should Work With a Spanish Tutor Although you might be very anxious or nervous about having a Spanish tutor, it can be extremely useful for you. As a tutor, I strongly believe in having casual, laid-back conversations in Spanish or Spanglish for practice â€" it helps you get comfortable, and it eases your nerves so when I do challenge your knowledge of Spanish, you arent as timid. My lessons vary student to student because I know everyone is different and everyone learns differently. The main focus for shy or nervous students is to give them the confidence they need to speak Spanish proudly with anyone. Homework I do believe in giving homework to my students, but before you roll your eyes, my assignments are never that hard to complete. The following is normally what I would assign my shy speakers: Record yourself having a conversation with yourself in only Spanish. Record yourself reading for a few minutes from a Spanish article/book/website. Record yourself talking about your hobbies in English, and then translate it into Spanish. Yep, for some reason we decided to endow the phrasal verb make out can have all three of these meaning. Dont you love English?As far as kissing, to make out means a bit more than just a little kiss on the cheek, or the lips for that matter.You may hear English speakers say (especially in spoken English) that someone made out well from a situation, or made out like a bandit. Some examples of using make out in this sense:My cousin invested in technology stocks in the 1990s and made out like a bandit.How did you make out at the casino last night?Another meaning is to exit a situation or place. This is the only one that can be split, and always has the word it between make and out. The five things each child needs to bring to school The five things each child needs to bring to school The five things each child needs to bring to schoolSchoolsWhen I attended secondary school back in the 1970`s I would transport my textbooks and pens - the paraphernalia of learning - from class to class in a heavy briefcase. So heavy was this case that my hands today faintly bear the callouses from carrying it to school, from class to class, and back home. I can recall the day my slide rule was displaced by a newfangled electronic calculator, and when my bottle of ink gave way to convenient fountain pen cartridges, which had far less tendency to leak over my exercise books. I was a meticulous pupil, always careful to ensure I packed my case correctly each evening. To arrive at school without everything you needed for the day was a grievous offence, and one that more careless pupils were regularly punished for. In the spirit of sharing my methodical ways, here are the five most important things every pupil should make sure they bring to school: 1. Pupils needs to ensure they pack all the text books and exercise books required for each lesson. This may sound obvious, but throughout my teaching career I was constantly dismayed at the number of students who failed to bring their books to class. Their negligence would cause lessons to be disrupted, as I would be required to find extra reading and writing paraphernalia. Perhaps this is less of a problem these days, as students can easily view their time tables on their smartphones, or even the school website. 2. Students must ensure they bring with them all the stationary they will need for the day`s lessons. This will of course include pens and pencils, but might also feature more specialised instruments, such as rulers, protractors and stencils. Schools will of course have many of these items, but lessons will run a lot more smoothly if the pupils check what classes they have, and bring in with them everything they need for their lessons. 3. Any students afflicted with a medical condition must make sure they bring their medication with them. Each school will have its own policy regarding the health care of its students, and will be aware of those pupils with allergies, or other conditions such as diabetes or asthma. The school nurse will probably have an insulin injection, or a nebuliser, but it will be the personal responsibility of the student to bring in their own medication, which they can immediately administer should they feel the need to do so. 4. In a perfect world pupils would not need to bring any money into school, but depending on their personal circumstances, they may need to pay for their lunch and travel, so it is important that pupils have enough funds for each day. No child should ever go hungry, and if they have left home without enough money, they can tell a teacher, who will make sure they still receive a meal; but it will certainly easier if students try to remember to bring enough money with them. 5. This last point may sound a little idealistic and vague, but each pupil needs to try to bring an ; attentive and positive attitude to class. Only with this mental attitude will they be fully receptive to their lessons, and in a position to learn at their full capacity. This positive outlook ; can only be attained if the child has had sufficient sleep and a good breakfast. When I was a teacher I would have a number of pupils arriving hungry to school every single day, who were in no physical state to give their full attention to what I was teaching. Pupils not getting enough sleep was also a major problem, and with the ubiquity of mobile phones, a distraction that was fortunately not around during my career, I can only imagine pupils are getting even less rest. 85 days ago0Add a Comment

The pictures you see posted on National Geographic didn’t happen because somebody stayed inside. People risk their lives for the best angle or the most vibrant picture. You’re doing the world a favor by pursuing a career and job environment that not many could handle. Athletes endure extreme weather. Field players will play in the rain or cold weather and are at a higher risk of injury. The long practices and exercises they prepare for games with are great resistance builders, but I can’t imagine what it’s like running after a soccer ball in negative degree weather! Dedicated fans deserve a round of applause, too. The Bedroom I resonate highly with not wanting to leave the house, ever. Journalists, writers, and editors can do their job from a computer anywhere. If you are pursuing an online career, the chances of working from home are pretty high. Image via (Pinterest) Working from your bedroom means not having to change out of your pajamas, not having to leave your pet alone for hours, and not having to waste a good outfit for the same people you see every day. “But wouldn’t you just procrastinate?” I see how that can be a concern, but this job environment doesn’t work for everyone. Obviously, you could just go back to bed, maybe watch TV, or literally get up and do anything else. If you’re like me, however, you’ll be able to sit down and zip through your work in one sitting because you can concentrate long enough to get your work done. The  Workroom If collaboration and teamwork is your ideal job environment, the workroom is the best place for you. Sitting at a table where anyone else can join in and sit quietly or spark a conversation on a project can really boost teamwork and positive coworker relations. The better you are at talking to your team members about a certain problem or concern, the more practice you will have when it comes to tackling small conversation with strangers. Strangers walking in for some body fuel can inspire writers to create a character they weren’t sure how to develop or even inspire them to a create a new character. Relying on a full battery will help you focus on your work and gives you a break to look forward to and recharge. The fact that you have to travel very little for some coffee is nice, too. The Hospital Doctors and nurses deserve a special credit for being society’s healers. The hospital is a tough work environment that takes many years of development, knowledge, and hands-on practice to prepare for. Sleepless nights due to long shifts and surgeries, exposure to illness, and stressful cases can take a toll on a person’s heart and well-being. These are just a few of the reasons that the medical field is understaffed. On The Go The mobile age is only getting better. Being able to work from literally anywhere is something very appealing to younger generations. We the people who grew up with cellphones and laptops are taking advantage of the accessibility that mobile devices provide to get work done.
